The European Union could “act quickly and firmly” in response to what it deems “unjustified” visa bans issued by the United States against five Europeans involved in combating digital hatred and misinformation, an EU official has said.
EU Officials Condemn US Move as ‘Coercion’
Officials from Europe including Emmanuel Macron accused Washington of “bullying and threats”, after the visa restrictions were placed on individuals that were at the heart of efforts to introduce legislation governing US-based technology firms.
“For too long, European activists have spearheaded organised efforts to pressure US companies to suppress American viewpoints they oppose,” stated a senior US official online. “This government will not stand for these egregious acts of extraterritorial censorship.”
Broad Criticism From EU Nations
Nations including Germany, Spain, and the UK, alongside numerous EU representatives joined the French president in condemning the move.
The bans were imposed on Tuesday on a former EU commissioner involved in crafting the bloc’s Digital Services Act (DSA), as well as four activists fighting false information, including two in Germany and two in the UK.
