A trader made nearly half a million dollars on the ouster of Nicolás Maduro just before it was officially announced, sparking debate about whether someone profited from confidential information of the event.

Market Movement in Wagers

Predictions made on the forecasting site, an online prediction market, that the Venezuelan president would be no longer in control by the close of the month rose in the period preceding President Donald Trump announced on the weekend that the Venezuelan leader had been taken into custody.

A single trader, which registered on the site last month and took four positions, all on the Venezuelan situation, profited a total of $436K from a initial bet of $32,537.

Who placed the bet is a mystery. This unidentified trader had only a cryptographic address for identification.

Odds Fluctuate Before News Break

Trading information shows that participants put the odds of a political change at just 6.5% in the late afternoon of the prior Friday.

Yet the market's assessment had climbed to eleven percent by shortly before midnight and skyrocketed in the morning of January 3rd, suggesting a sudden change in betting activity immediately prior to the social media post was made.

"This specific wager has all the signs of a trade based on confidential knowledge," stated Dennis Kelleher.

Several of other traders also earned significant sums from predicting the capture.

Regulatory Scrutiny Intensifies

Politicians are growing concerned.

Proposed legislation introduced on Monday aims to prohibit federal workers from placing bets on prediction markets if they have "confidential government knowledge" related to a bet.

Industry Context

Event-driven betting sites have surged in popularity in the past few years, with traders able to bet on everything from sports outcomes to politics.

Prediction markets encountered regulatory challenges under the last presidential term. But it has received a warmer welcome during the Trump presidency.

Trading on insider information is a crime in the stock market, but there are more ambiguous rules in the forecasting industry.

An official representative for Kalshi said their site "has clear rules against trading on insider information of any form."
